MYTHOLOGY

In Norse mythology, Midgard is the realm where humanity resides, nestled between the domains of the Aesir and the giants. The name itself signifies a sheltered or safeguarded area at the heart of creation. Encircling Midgard is an impenetrable ocean inhabited by the colossal sea serpent Jörmungandr. Forming a protective barrier around Midgard is a wall crafted from the colossal giant Ymir’s very brows. The formidable Norse gods can access Midgard by traversing the ethereal Bivrost, a bridge that spans the Northern Lights and is watched over by the vigilant god Heimdall.

CREATION

Bivrost® Midgard Single Malt Whisky is handcrafted at the world’s northernmost distillery in Arctic Norway, at 69 °N. The malt is made from Nordic barley, distilled in our hi-tech still and diluted with glacial meltwater. This is a fusion of modern distilling technology and tradition. The casks have been maturing in an old, underground NATO storage, as well as a modern viking longhouse. The temperature variations are vast, with an average, yearly temperature of only 0,6 °C.

YEAST: Brewers yeast. Saccharomyces eubayanus, Lager yeast.

MALT: Pilsener Malt, made from Planet and Popino Nordic barley.

WATER: Water sourced from Elvejordvannet, which receives melted glacier water from the Lyngen alpine range.

DISTILLED: Distilled in 2018 – 2020, with two active plates in our copper pot/column still. Average distillation time ranges between 8 – 10 hours, average strength heart collected of undiluted new make is around ~75%abv.

CASK HANDLING: Midgard was matured in different Oloroso Sherry oak casks, predominantly European oak, some American oak for complexity and also Spanish oak was involved. Maturation age varies between 4 to 5 years.
